As part of our Black History Month celebrations, Year 5 have been learning about the lives and achievements of famous Black Georgian Britons. We explored the significant contributions of individuals who often go unrecognised in history and discussed how they overcame challenges to make a lasting impact on British society. The children engaged thoughtfully with these stories and even came up with questions they would like to ask these historical figures if they had the chance.
In our History lessons, Year 5 have also been exploring the autobiography of Mary Prince, a powerful first-hand account of her life as an enslaved woman. We discussed the importance of first-hand accounts like Mary’s in helping us gain a deeper understanding of key historical events. Through these personal stories, the children learned how these narratives shape our view of the past and highlight the human experience behind historical facts.
