Our vision for music in Morningside is that we provide every child with a solid foundation in musical skills and that we seek to build every child’s love of music through high quality musical experiences, both within and outside of school. Learning music develops all aspects of a child’s learning from the physical action of using an instrument to the mathematical skills needed to keep a pulse. At Morningside we provide every child with high quality music lessons, enrichment activities and opportunities outside school. We aim for every child to leave Morningside with an understanding and love of music which they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.
Every child from year 1 – 6 receives a weekly music lesson in which they focus on the basic elements of music: pitch, rhythm and harmony. The lessons are designed to incorporate the aims of the National Curriculum and often link to the school’s wider topic curriculum. In addition to class lessons many children participate in extra musical activities, such as, African drumming, steel pans, choirs, ukulele clubs, guitar club, recorder consort, musicianship classes and composition classes.
Additionally there are several points every year in which the school celebrates its musical talent, these opportunities include: Christmas Nativities, Black History Month, Comic Relief and Globovison.
