Art & Design Technology

Explore
Vision: Through the teaching of Art and D.T. at Morningside, we aim to provide a well-rounded and diverse education. Art allows children to ignite their inner creativity and gives them avenues to express their thoughts, feelings and understandings in new and exciting ways. Art education has been directly linked to gains in maths, writing, reading and other subject areas as well as deepening their cultural understanding of the world around them. Our hope, through our exciting arts program, is to develop culturally aware, creative students, with a knowledge of the importance of art and creativity in their future lives. Most importantly it gives students a different pathway to achieve their learning and show their understanding.

Computing

Explore
Our vision is to embed computing in as many learning opportunities as possible. This will provide our children with concrete experiences of when and how they can use digital media in different aspects of their lives. Through stimulating and challenging experiences children will continue to develop their love for learning and through this become confident and independent users of a range of software and hardware. In the ever-changing digital world, we aim to provide all children with not only the skills to use the technology that exists today, but the life-long thinking skills and passion to continue to develop their love for computing through secondary school and beyond. At Morningside, we promote digital citizenship through modelling how social media should be used responsibly with a strong focus on creating a good digital footprint. Our school blog and Twitter feed show children what a wonderful audience the internet can be and is always a great place to spot a grammar error or two from celebrities!

English: Reading & Phonics

Explore
At Morningside, we have created a Reading Pathway which leads children from their first first steps of reading, developing a love of reading and creating fluent and confident readers, who by the end of year 6 are well-able to clarify and question a range of texts.

English: Writing

Explore
At Morningside, we aim to give our children a writing curriculum which enables them to become confident, creative and independent writers who are well able to articulate their own ideas. We support our children to develop transferable skills which they can use across the wider curriculum and throughout their lives. We use educational visits, high quality literature, film, art and music as stimuli for writing which links learning to real life experience and provides a contextualised, meaningful curriculum. Morningside writers leave with a strong independent writer’s voice and the technical skills necessary to communicate clearly in the modern world.

Humanities

Explore
At Morningside, we aim to give our children a humanities curriculum which enables them to become confident, creative and independent learners who can explore the use of different knowledge and skills throughout their learning. We seek to broaden children’s real-life experiences both inside and outside of school through educational visits, visitors, experimentation, exploration and discovery. We have worked very hard to design a curriculum which reflects our children's heritages, expands their horizons and makes them carefully consider key themes and debates. Within lessons, our children acquire a range of knowledge and skills in both history and geography which they can then apply to other subjects and in a variety of situations. Furthermore, it is our aim that through historical and geographical learning, children will become accountable citizens, understanding their role in protecting our world and environment and knowing how they can cause positive change and development as they grow.

Mathematics

Explore
At Morningside, we believe in the power of maths to change our children’s lives. Being a confident mathematician enables children to solve real-life problems. We are committed to equipping our pupils with the necessary knowledge and understanding to be good time-keepers, savvy shoppers and discerning citizens who question the figures put before them. As teachers who are passionate about maths, we want our children to know that the maths they learn inside and outside of the classroom has the potential unlock doors in their futures as scientists, engineers and designers. We also believe that, like a love of literature, a love of maths – its patterns and its power – is a fundamental right for all children.

MfL: Spanish

Explore
Our aim is to embed Spanish in our school community so the pupils understand the purpose of learning a Modern Foreign Language. Learning a new language is key to becoming part of the global community we live in nowadays and by setting a starting point in Primary Education, we can be on the right track to achieving this objective. The learning of an additional language will help the children to be successful in their professional future and feel part of wider society. At this stage, our objective is to build children’s curiosity and to develop their passion for Spanish. We provide the children with engaging and fun activities to develop their linguistics skills and build on their enthusiasm and engagement. This begins in EYFS with informal lessons and educational games all the way to KS2, where the pupils will start to demonstrate an understanding of basic grammar and listening skills.

Music

Explore
Our vision for music in Morningside is that we provide every child with a solid foundation in musical skills and that we seek to build every child’s love of music through high quality musical experiences, both within and outside of school. Learning music develops all aspects of a child’s learning from the physical action of using an instrument to the mathematical skills needed to keep a pulse. At Morningside we provide every child with high quality music lessons, enrichment activities and opportunities outside school. We aim for every child to leave Morningside with an understanding and love of music which they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

PSHE and Citizenship

Explore
Vision: We at Morningside Primary strive for excellence in education by providing a safe, secure, caring family environment, where all are valued and respected as individuals, enabling them to reach their full potential.

Physical Education

Explore
Vision: Physical Education is taught across the school by specialist coaches from Nation Sports. Through the use of coaches, we hope children are able to increase their knowledge regarding the rules of sports, the importance of team work and how fitness affects the body. We also desire that children find enjoyment in sports and display good sportsmanship when faced with challenges.

Religious Education

Explore
Through the teaching of Religious Education, we hope all our children are educated to develop spiritually, emotionally, educationally and morally. This will enable them to understand themselves and others, and to cope with the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities of living in such a diverse world.

Science

Explore
Our vision is to give our children a Science curriculum which enables them to explore and discover the world around them, resulting in a deeper understanding. This involves exciting, practical hands on experiences that encourage curiosity and questioning. We aim for these stimulating and challenging experiences to help secure and extend their scientific knowledge and vocabulary. We believe that these opportunities will ensure that our children are confident learners, who will explore the world by posing insightful and inquisitive questions about the world around them.

National Curriculum

Explore
At Morningside, we teach the National Curriculum. In Key Stage 1 and 2 the curriculum is made up of core subjects:
