Vision: We at Morningside Primary strive for excellence in education by providing a safe, secure, caring family environment, where all are valued and respected as individuals, enabling them to reach their full potential.

Curriculum

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and citizenship, promotes pupils’ personal social and emotional development, as well as their health and well-being. It supports pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role in society at local, national and international levels. It helps them become informed, thoughtful and responsible individuals who are aware of their duties and rights. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. It gives children an understanding of the rights and responsibilities that are part of being a good citizen, which enables them to play an active and healthy part in the life of our school, their community and the world.

We follow the Jigsaw scheme of work for PSHE, which has an integrated whole school approach.  Each half term begins with a whole school assembly to introduce the theme.  This is then reflected in each week’s focus value.  Each class has a weekly PSHE session to explore these themes. This subject is taught mainly with various hands on activities, discussions, debates and circle time.

PSHE themes:

  • Autumn 1: Being me in my world
  • Autumn 2: Celebrating difference
  • Spring 1: Dream and goals
  • Spring 2: Healthy me
  • Summer 1: Relationships
  • Summer 2:  Changing me

We at Morningside aim to provide experiences that will have maximum impact on learning through developing confidence, encouraging an active role and developing good, respectful relationships. Teaching methods are designed to encourage sharing ideas as part of a group and listening and respecting the views of others.

British Values at Morningside

The DfE’s non-statutory guidance on promoting British values in schools outlines the understanding and knowledge expected of pupils as a result of schools meeting the requirement “to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

At Morningside Primary School, we promote the core aspects of British values through the SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) work that is integrated throughout the curriculum. We recognise that such development is most successful when those values and attitudes are promoted by all the staff and provide a model of behaviour for pupils.

SMSC at Morningside

At Morningside, we provide thoughtful and wide-ranging opportunities for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and their physical well-being which enables our pupils to thrive. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and, within this, the promotion of fundamental British values, are at the heart of the school’s work. We believe this equips them to be thoughtful, caring and active citizens in school and in wider society.
