Black History Month
October is Black History Month. This week, all classes have been learning about how Black history is a vital part of Britain’s history. We want our children to know the past in order to shape the future.

On Thursday, we enjoyed a delicious meal cooked by our talented kitchen team. We enjoyed eating jollof rice and peas, jerk chicken and plantain, with puff puff and Senegalese dumplings for dessert.
Hackney Museum Black History Workshops
Over the last few weeks all classes from year 1 to 6 have visited Hackney Museum to participate in Black History Month workshops. They learnt about three countries in Africa; Congo, Kenya and Ethiopia and how people from these countries have contributed to their communities. They explored how African heritage individuals have shaped Hackney to be the borough it is today.
Hackney Council has organised a number of free events over the month of October and November to celebrate Black History Month.

Play at Morningside
This week has seen the introduction of some new playground equipment that the children have been able to play with. The new buggies and babies have been a real hit, even with some of our older children. The children have enjoyed dressing up as superheroes and have loved wearing different face masks. Children also created obstacle courses for each other.
Holidays during term time
At Morningside, we believe that for children to achieve their full potential they need to attend regularly and punctually. Children should be at school, on time, every day the school is open, unless the reason for the absence is unavoidable.
Please note that we do not authorise holidays in term time under any circumstances. Parents & carers need to ensure that they do not book holidays or flights before term ends or after term has begun. In recent years we have seen the number of requests for time out of school to visit seriously sick elderly relatives rise massively in the last weeks of July and the first weeks of September. It is impossible for us to distinguish between a true family crisis and those seeking cheaper flights.
If you book holidays during term time you risk being fined.
School Uniform expectations
Jewellery
Parents/Carers are reminded that children should not wear any jewellery to school. If your child has pierced ears, small studs may be worn.
Nail polish
No child should wear nail varnish in school. If you have attended an event and your child has worn nail varnish, this should be removed before they come back to school.
Fleeces and jumpers
There have been increasingly more children wearing bright coloured jumpers to school. You are reminded that navy jumpers only should be worn.
Parents Evening
We are pleased to announce that our first parents evening this year is on Monday 6th November 2023 from 3.40 – 8pm in your child’s classroom. This is a great opportunity for you to meet your child’s class teacher, hear and see what your child has been learning in class and discuss your child’s next steps.
To sign up for a slot you will need to use Arbor. This can be done through your Arbor App. If you don’t have a login for Arbor please speak with the office.
This link has a good video explaining how to do this: https://support.arbor-education.com/hc/en-us/articles/360020147458-Getting-started-Log-into-the-Parent-Portal-and-the-Arbor-App#what-is-the-parent-portal–0-0
Appointments will not go live until after the October half term break. You will be able to book an appointment from Monday 30th at 9:00am.
If you have any questions, please contact our office staff.
Flu Vaccine
The NHS flu vaccine team will be visiting on Friday 3rd November 2023 and returning on Tuesday 28th November 2023 (for anyone who missed the first date).
The nasal spray will be offered to all students from Reception to Year 6. The nasal flu vaccine is painless and quick. Side effects are uncommon and generally mild.

Attendance Class of The Week
Each week, we will share the class, who has the highest attendance. This week, we want to celebrate 2S, who achieved 98%. A huge well done and keep up the excellent work; it has a great impact on learning and progress. At the end of the half term, the class with the highest attendance will receive a special reward.
