It’s been another busy and joyful week in school. On Friday, it was so lovely to welcome families back into classrooms for our first Family Friday of the year. Children loved sharing a reading book with you — the buzz of reading together was brilliant.
Our Year 6 pupils have also been taking part in Bikeability — the national cycle training programme that builds practical skills and confidence for safe road cycling. The sessions have been a real highlight, developing independence, safety and responsibility.
From this week, each newsletter will include a special curriculum focus. We begin with Science — at the end of this newsletter you’ll see our young scientists in action, exploring and investigating with curiosity.
This week in assembly, we celebrated International Democracy Day. We read Show Up and Vote by Valerie Bolling & Maine Diaz, a story that reminded us how important it is that everyone has a voice and a chance to take part. Together, we reflected on how this links to our school value for the half term: Valuing Others – showing respect, listening to different opinions, and recognising that every contribution matters.

We know that a mid morning snack can help children with their concentration in school between breakfast and lunchtime. EYFS and Key Stage 1 children are already provided with fruit and vegetable snacks. Children in Key Stage 2 are welcome to bring a snack into school. However, due to serious airborn allergies within school these must be fruit or vegetable snacks only.
Here are the events happening next week:
Tuesday 23rd September Year 6 Parents CATs and Secondary Transfer Information Meeting 8:45am
Wednesday 24th September Workshop: Phonics for Y1 and Y2 families 8:45am
Thursday 25th September Workshop: Phonics for Reception families 8:45am

They have an exciting programme of events coming up – including a big gala performance at the Hackney Empire in January. They will be holding a free taster session near Morningside on Wednesday 24th September, 4.30 – 5.30pm. See the flyer below to find out more details and to register for the session.

This week we are focusing on Science. Children across the school have been busy exploring different materials – and what we should use them for; creating models of the digestive system; learning about how our joints work, and finding out what is the best material to insulate cups to keep drinks warm. They have been using their skills of observation, fair testing and taking accurate measurements.
