British Science Week
British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths that takes place between 8th-17th March. The theme this year is ‘Smashing Stereotypes,’ supporting children to challenge long standing stereotypes of scientists, with the aim of encouraging more people from all backgrounds to see themselves as scientists.
Throughout this week each class carried out an exciting investigation. Ask your children what they observed.
EYFS: Changing apples. What will happen to the apple if we leave it for a week?
Year 1: What happens when you add water to skittles?
Year 2: Which habitat do our minibeasts prefer?
Year 3: What happens to white flowers when they are left in coloured water?
Year 4: Which material is best for keeping our hot chocolate warm?
Year 5: Which material is best for keeping our hot chocolate warm?
Year 6: How does my heart rate change throughout the day?
Author Visit
We were lucky enough to be offered the opportunity for Sav Akyuz (a local author and illustrator) to run an interactive reading workshop for year 2 and 3. He talked about the process behind writing and illustrating his two amazing picture books, ‘I am Bear’ and ‘Bear Moves’. Sav has recently become a Patron for the Primary Hackney Reading Champions, and our very own Reading Champions have been lucky enough to take part in two of his sessions already!
Attendance
This term we are having a big focus on improving our school attendance. Attendance Matters and has a huge impact on your child’s attainment and progress.
Please read this information so you know if your child should be in school or not if you think they are ill. Should I keep my child off school?

Ruya 2S
Please come and collect your prize from the office.
The Big Plastic Count
This week, the Sustainability Squad have launched the Big Plastic Count at Morningside. This week they have asked families to count out plastic waste and so they can tell the government how much is thrown away in the UK each week. On Monday, every child will bring home a Big Plastic Count tally sheet so that you can count the amount of plastic waste thrown away in your home. Please return these to school on Monday 18th March, so that we collect our results together. Together we can fight plastic pollution.
Red Nose Day
Thank you to all the children who dressed in red and brought in a coin donation for Red Nose day. All money raised will go to Comic Relief, which supports incredible projects and organisations that are making a difference for people across the UK and around the world. We raised £210. Thank you.
The children really enjoyed participating in the egg and spoon race today with red noses instead of eggs. Thank you to the school council for this brilliant idea.
