World Book Day
On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day. It was a great opportunity for children and staff to celebrate and share our love of reading. Our theme this year was ‘Goldilocks and The Three Bears.’ Each class read a version of the traditional tale and completed some reading and art activities linking to the story. For example, year 1 read ‘The Ghanaian Goldilocks,’which is a modern twist on the classic fairytale. This is the story of a boy with sun lightened hair named Kofi, better known to his friends and family as Goldilocks. Like the Goldilocks in the traditional tale, Kofi has been known to get into some trouble here and there, but it’s an unexpected visit to a neighbour’s house that teaches him a valuable lesson of a lifetime.
It was amazing to see the wonderful costumes the children came dressed in. Thank you for helping make this a special day.
Royal Institute of Science Workshops
Today we were lucky enough to have the Royal Institute of Science come into our school to perform a number of spectacular science shows for our children and Year 1 families. The interactive shows were packed with experiments, demonstrations and the occasional explosion. A great way to kick off British Science Week!
Play at Morningside
Thank you to all families who donated items for our playground. It has made a real difference to our play offer and it is great seeing household items recycled and reused in a different way. This week we will be drawing out the winner of the voucher. All you need to do is bring your completed bingo card with your child’s name and class written on the back and hand it in at the office by Wednesday 13th March. We will be announcing the winner in next week’s newsletter.
The Big Plastic Count
Next week, the Sustainability Squad will be running the Big Plastic Count at Morningside and they want you to be part of it. For one week in March, thousands of schools, households, community groups and businesses will be coming together to count their plastic waste. By counting out plastic waste and telling the government how much is thrown away in the UK each week, we hope to persuade the government to help us phase out plastic pollution. On Monday, every child will bring home a Big Plastic Count tally sheet so that you can count the amount of plastic waste thrown away in your home. Please return these to school on Monday 18.03.24 so that we can collect our results together. Together we can fight plastic pollution.
Red Nose Day
Next Friday the 15th, it is Red Nose day. We are asking for all children to come dressed in red and to bring along a coin donation for Comic Relief. The School Councillors have decided that they would like to do an egg and spoon race (with red noses) for our Comic Relief fundraiser.
Each year group will go outside to complete this in the back playground. The teachers will make sure they take lots of pictures to share.
PTA
We were delighted with the number of parents who came to the first PTA meeting last Friday. Thank you to everyone who came and signed up to be part of it.
The PTA is a great way to get to know other parents and carers, help to plan events for children and families and in doing so, raise money for the school community.
The next meeting will be on Friday 15th March at 9:15am (after Family Friday). Please come along if you are interested to find out more or to sign up to help – we will be organising the first event: a bake sale. There is no minimum commitment required, everyone has a different amount of time they can give.
Football competition
Yesterday, the year 4/5 boys football team played a friendly football match at Morningside against Berger Primary School. Everyone in the team showed excellent sportsmanship, encouraged each other and tried their best. Well done to the team. It was an incredibly close game with Berger scoring a last minute goal to win 2-1.
Attendance
This term we are having a big focus on improving our school attendance. Attendance Matters and has a huge impact on your child’s attainment and progress.
Did you know? When children attend school they:
- Can achieve their full potential
- Have better career prospects
- Grow in confidence
- Keep up with work and homework
- Make good friendships
