Black History
Throughout October, we will be celebrating Black History Month. At Morningside we teach Black History through the curriculum all year long, and have a particular in depth focus in October. Each class has or will be visiting Hackney Museum where they have an opportunity to participate in a workshop. The theme of these workshops will be Hackney carnival. The children will learn about the history of carnival in Hackney, as well as the importance of music and costumes in carnival.
Towards the end of the term, as part of their history learning, each class will complete a Black History Month unit. This will focus on key figures and events from Black British and World History using the book Black and British by David Olusoga as a key text:
Nursery: One Love – Bob Marley
Reception: Coming to England – Floella Benjamin
Year 1: Little People, Big Dreams – Rosa Parks
Year 2: The Underground Railroad – Henry ‘Box’ Brown
Year 3: Roman Britain – Septimius Severus and Ivory Bangle Lady
Year 4: Tudor England – John Blanke and Jacques Francis
Year 5: Georgian Britain – Dido Elizabeth Belle, Ignatius Sancho and Mary Prince
Year 6: Victorian Britain – Sarah Forbes Bonetta and Pablo Fanque
During the week, there will be a special Black History Month lunch and we will be learning about songs and music by Black composers and artists in our music lessons and assemblies. We would also like to invite parents and carers in to share books and stories in class. Please see the poster below.
We look forward to sharing our learning with you.

Please bring any items that you would like to swap to the main office during the week beginning 14th October. You will be given tokens that you can swap for items at the event. Items must be in good, clean condition. We look forward to seeing you there.

World Mental Health Day
Next Thursday, 10th October, is World Mental Health day. Mental health is about how we think, how we feel and how we behave. Your mental health is what makes you happy, angry, sad – it’s to do with your emotions.
Mental health is just as important as physical health. This year we will be focusing on Five to Thrive. These are five key things that can promote wellbeing and make life happier.
- Giving
- Learning new things
- Taking notice
- Being active
- Connecting
